Clear Aligners
Explore professionally supervised clear aligners for appropriate orthodontic problems. Learn about evaluation, wear, monitoring and when referral may be appropriate.

Clear aligners are removable orthodontic appliances that move teeth through a planned series of trays. They can be a discreet treatment option for many adults and teens, but they are still orthodontic treatment and should begin with a diagnosis rather than simply a scan and a set of trays.
What can clear aligners treat?
Aligners may be appropriate for selected cases of crowding, spacing and bite correction. The amount and type of tooth movement that can be predictably achieved varies. More complex tooth movement, skeletal problems or significant bite discrepancies may be better managed with an orthodontist or with another treatment approach.
Why an in-person examination matters
Before moving teeth, the health of the gums, supporting bone, teeth and existing restorations needs to be assessed. Untreated decay, active periodontal disease and some bite problems can change the treatment plan. Dental imaging may be recommended when it will provide information needed for safe planning.
How much do aligners need to be worn?
Aligners generally need to be worn most of the day and night, removing them for eating, drinking anything other than water and oral hygiene. The exact wear and change schedule depends on the treatment plan. Consistency is important because the next tray is designed around the expected movement from the previous one.
What happens during treatment?
Progress should be monitored. Attachments, enamel reduction between teeth or other adjuncts may be used in selected cases. If the teeth stop tracking as expected, additional scans or refinement trays may be needed.
What about mail-order aligners?
The FDA has warned consumers about unauthorized direct-to-consumer aligners sold without a prescription and professional supervision. Moving teeth can affect the bite and the supporting tissues, so professional diagnosis and follow-up matter.
