Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening can lighten many common types of external and age-related discoloration. It works by using peroxide-based whitening agents that break down color molecules within the tooth structure. The goal is a brighter natural tooth shade, not an artificial white that ignores the rest of the smile.

What stains respond to whitening?

Yellow or brown discoloration in natural teeth often responds well. Gray discoloration, a single dark tooth, internal staining and color changes from certain developmental conditions or medications can be less predictable. Existing crowns, veneers and fillings do not whiten, so they need to be considered when planning the final shade.

In-office or take-home whitening?

Both approaches can be effective. In-office whitening uses higher-concentration materials under professional supervision and can create a faster initial change. Custom take-home trays use a lower concentration over a longer period and provide more control over the final shade. Some patients use a combination of the two.

Will whitening cause sensitivity?

Temporary tooth sensitivity is the most common side effect. It can often be managed by adjusting the concentration, wear time or frequency and by using desensitizing products when appropriate. Whitening should be postponed if active decay, leaking restorations or significant untreated sensitivity is present.

Does whitening damage enamel?

Professionally supervised whitening used as directed is generally considered safe for appropriate patients. More product is not better. Overuse of bleaching products can increase sensitivity and irritate the gums.

How long do results last?

Whitening is not permanent. Coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and normal aging can gradually darken teeth again. Occasional touch-up treatment may be appropriate after the initial course.

Before whitening, Dr. Sharma can identify whether the discoloration is likely to respond and whether any restorations in the visible smile will affect the final result.
