Mini Dental Implants

Mini dental implants are narrow-diameter implants designed for specific clinical situations. They use a smaller fixture than a conventional dental implant and are most commonly discussed as a way to improve retention of selected removable prostheses.

Are mini implants the same as conventional implants?

No. Their smaller diameter changes the way forces are distributed and limits where they can be predictably used. Mini implants are not simply a less expensive version of a conventional implant for every missing tooth.

When might mini implants be considered?

They may be considered in selected patients with limited bone volume, certain anatomical constraints or a need for additional denture retention. The restorative goal, bone quality, bite forces and long-term maintenance all need to be considered.

Do mini implants avoid bone grafting?

Sometimes their smaller diameter allows placement in a narrower ridge, but that does not mean grafting can always be avoided or that the site is automatically appropriate. The available bone still needs to be evaluated carefully.

Can a mini implant replace a molar?

Using narrow implants in high-load areas requires careful case selection. A conventional implant or another restorative design may provide a better long-term solution depending on the location and forces involved.
