Modern Dental Bonding

Modern dental bonding uses tooth-colored composite resin to make conservative changes to the shape, contour or appearance of a tooth. Because composite can be added directly to enamel, bonding often requires little or no removal of healthy tooth structure.

What can bonding improve?

Bonding may be useful for small chips, worn edges, minor shape discrepancies, small gaps and localized discoloration. It can also be used to refine tooth proportions when the bite and underlying tooth position are appropriate.

How is bonding different from a veneer?

Composite bonding is placed directly on the tooth and can often be completed in one visit. A porcelain veneer is fabricated outside the mouth and may provide different optical properties and long-term stain resistance. Bonding is usually more conservative, but composite can chip, wear or stain over time and may require maintenance.

What makes bonding look natural?

Natural-looking bonding depends on more than matching one shade. Tooth translucency, surface texture, line angles, edge shape and the relationship to neighboring teeth all affect the result. Careful finishing and polishing are as important as the composite itself.

Is bonding reversible?

When composite is added without removing meaningful enamel, treatment can be highly conservative. That does not mean every case is completely reversible because small surface adjustments may still be needed. Dr. Sharma will explain what tooth preparation, if any, is expected before treatment.

How long does dental bonding last?

Longevity varies with the size and location of the restoration, bite forces, habits such as nail biting or ice chewing and whether a patient grinds or clenches. Repairs are often possible when a small area chips.

Our approach is to make the smallest change that can predictably accomplish the goal. For patients considering a larger smile change, we may compare bonding with veneers, whitening or orthodontic treatment before recommending anything irreversible.
