Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually develop in the late teen years or early adulthood. Some erupt into a healthy, functional position and can be monitored. Others remain impacted, partially erupt or create problems for the tooth in front of them.

Does everyone need their wisdom teeth removed?

No. A healthy, fully erupted wisdom tooth that can be cleaned and monitored may not need treatment. Removal is considered when the risks of keeping the tooth outweigh the risks of surgery.

Why are wisdom teeth removed?

Reasons can include recurrent infection around a partially erupted tooth, decay that cannot be predictably restored, damage to a neighboring tooth, certain cysts or pathology, periodontal problems or other findings identified during examination and imaging.

What does “impacted” mean?

An impacted tooth has not fully erupted into a normal position. It may be covered by gum tissue, bone or both. Impaction by itself does not automatically prove that removal is necessary; the position, symptoms and risk to surrounding structures matter.

How are wisdom teeth evaluated?

The examination looks at eruption, gum health, cleaning access, decay and symptoms. A panoramic image or other imaging may be used to evaluate root anatomy and the relationship to nearby structures when it will affect treatment planning.

Who performs the extraction?

Some third molars are straightforward while others are more complex. Dr. Sharma can evaluate the teeth and, when appropriate, refer to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for surgical treatment or sedation considerations.
