Dentures replace multiple missing teeth with a removable prosthesis. They may replace all of the teeth in an arch or only selected missing teeth. A good denture is not simply a set of teeth made to fit the mouth; it must balance appearance, speech, chewing, tissue health and the way the upper and lower teeth meet.
Full versus partial dentures
A full denture replaces all teeth in the upper or lower arch. A partial denture uses the remaining teeth and oral tissues for support and retention. The design depends on which teeth remain and their long-term prognosis.
What is an immediate denture?
An immediate denture is inserted around the time remaining teeth are removed so the patient is not without teeth during early healing. Because the gums and bone change after extraction, immediate dentures commonly need adjustment, relining or replacement as healing progresses.
Can implants make a denture more stable?
Yes. In appropriate patients, dental implants can improve the retention and stability of a removable denture. Some implant-supported restorations remain removable while others are fixed. Learn more about dental implants and full arch options.
How long does it take to get used to dentures?
There is an adjustment period. Speech, chewing and muscle control improve with practice, but sore spots or areas of excessive pressure should be adjusted rather than simply tolerated. A denture that once fit well may loosen over time as the jawbone and soft tissues change.
Do dentures need maintenance?
Yes. Dentures should be cleaned daily and removed as directed to allow the tissues to rest. The mouth still needs professional evaluation even when no natural teeth remain because the gums, bone, oral tissues and prosthesis can change.
