Dental Inlays & Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays are indirect restorations used when a tooth needs more support than a small direct filling can predictably provide but does not necessarily require a full crown. They are custom-made to replace the damaged portion of the tooth while preserving healthy structure that does not need to be covered.

What is the difference between an inlay and an onlay?

An inlay fits within the cusps of the tooth. An onlay extends over one or more cusps when those areas also need reinforcement. In everyday practice, the exact label matters less than the principle: restore the compromised part of the tooth without removing sound structure simply to fit a full-coverage restoration.

When might an onlay be appropriate?

It may be considered for a large failing filling, a fractured cusp or a tooth that needs additional reinforcement but still has enough strong enamel and tooth structure to support a partial-coverage restoration.

Onlay or crown?

A crown covers most or all of the visible tooth. An onlay preserves more of the tooth when the remaining structure allows it. A crown may still be more appropriate when damage is extensive, the tooth has a major crack or there is insufficient structure for predictable partial coverage.

What are inlays and onlays made from?

Common materials include ceramic and, in selected situations, metal or indirect composite. Material choice depends on appearance, remaining tooth structure, bite forces and the location of the restoration.

How is treatment completed?

The damaged portion of the tooth is removed and the preparation is shaped conservatively. A digital scan or impression is used to create the restoration. Depending on the workflow, the final restoration may be delivered the same day or at a later visit.
