"Teeth shaving" is a popular phrase on social media, but it describes two very different things. One is a small, conservative cosmetic refinement. The other is preparing teeth to receive veneers or crowns. Because enamel does not grow back, understanding the difference matters before any tooth structure is removed.
What is cosmetic tooth contouring?
Cosmetic contouring, also called enameloplasty or tooth reshaping, removes a very small amount of enamel to refine a tooth's shape. It can:
- Smooth small chips or rough edges
- Even out slightly uneven tooth lengths
- Soften pointed or overly long canines
- Refine small overlaps between front teeth
Contouring is usually quick, often done in a single visit and typically does not require numbing because only the outer enamel is involved. The results are immediate.
What is tooth preparation for veneers and crowns?
When a tooth is prepared for a porcelain veneer or a crown, a measured amount of tooth structure is removed so the restoration fits and looks natural rather than bulky. Veneers usually require a thin reduction of the front surface. In carefully selected cases, minimal prep veneers can preserve more enamel. Crowns require much more reduction because they cover the entire tooth.
Why are "shaved teeth" videos controversial?
Many viral videos show healthy teeth reduced to small pegs to receive full crowns for purely cosmetic reasons. That approach removes a large amount of healthy structure, is irreversible and can increase the long term risk of sensitivity, nerve damage and future treatment. Conservative cosmetic dentistry aims to change as little healthy tooth as necessary to achieve the goal.
Who is a good candidate for tooth contouring?
- People with small irregularities in shape or length
- Healthy teeth with adequate enamel thickness
- A stable bite without heavy grinding
Contouring is not ideal when enamel is already thin, when the issue is tooth position rather than shape or when reshaping would affect how the teeth meet.
What are the alternatives?
- Composite bonding adds material instead of removing it, often with little or no enamel reduction.
- Clear aligners correct position, which may reduce or eliminate the need to reshape or cover teeth.
- Whitening addresses color without changing shape.
- A smile makeover plan can combine small changes for a balanced result.
Does tooth contouring hurt? Is it permanent?
Minor enamel contouring is generally comfortable. It is permanent, because enamel does not regenerate. That is why careful planning, photos and sometimes a trial mockup are worth doing first. Learn how proportions guide planning in smile proportions and dental aesthetics.
