Palo Alto does not have a special climate that causes cavities. What matters more is what the local lifestyle can bring with it: dry mouth, long days outdoors, sports, frequent coffee or sparkling water and busy schedules that make preventive care easy to postpone.
1. Pay attention to dry mouth
Saliva helps wash away food debris, buffer acids and protect tooth surfaces. If your mouth often feels dry, water can help with comfort, but persistent dry mouth deserves a closer look because medications and health conditions can contribute. Sugar-free gum may also stimulate saliva when appropriate.
2. Use fluoride toothpaste twice a day
Fluoride helps strengthen enamel and lowers cavity risk. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth every day. More aggressive brushing is not better; a soft toothbrush and good technique are usually kinder to the gums.
3. Protect your teeth during sports
Cycling, basketball, soccer and other activities can lead to dental injuries. A properly fitted mouthguard can reduce the risk of chipped, fractured or knocked-out teeth during contact or collision sports.
4. Watch how often your teeth are exposed to sugar and acid
Frequent sipping and snacking can keep the mouth in an acidic environment for longer periods. Coffee drinks with sugar, sports drinks, soda and even acidic beverages such as flavored sparkling water may matter more when they are consumed slowly throughout the day. Frequency is important, not just the total amount.
5. Use your dental visits for prevention, not just repairs
Regular exams allow us to look for early decay, gum inflammation, wear, cracked teeth and other changes before they become larger problems. The right interval is individualized rather than automatically the same for every patient.
