What to Expect With Porcelain Veneers
How Veneers Work
Veneers can change the color, shape and proportion of selected teeth, but treatment should begin with the reason for the change. Tooth position, enamel, existing restorations, gum health and the bite all influence whether veneers are appropriate or whether a more conservative option would make more sense.
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic restorations bonded to the front surface of teeth. They can mask some discoloration and alter form, but they do not treat active disease or correct every orthodontic problem. We compare whitening, bonding and orthodontic treatment before recommending removal of healthy enamel.
FROM PLANNING TO FINAL CERAMICS
The preparation visit is individualized. When temporary veneers are appropriate, they protect the prepared teeth and can also give us useful information about shape, length and bite before the final ceramics are bonded.
- Local anesthetic may be used for comfort. Additional anxiety-management options can be discussed when appropriate.
- The amount of enamel preparation varies by case. Our goal is to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible while creating appropriate space and contours for the restoration.
- Temporary restorations may be placed while the dental laboratory fabricates the final veneers. Timing and temporary design depend on the treatment plan.
STEP 2: EVALUATION AND FINAL BONDING
This is the day you've envisioned:
- Before final bonding, we evaluate the fit, shade, proportions and relationship of the veneers to the surrounding teeth and gums.
- When changes are appropriate, they are discussed before definitive bonding. Some changes can be made chairside while others may require additional laboratory work.
- The final veneers are bonded using an adhesive protocol selected for the ceramic and tooth substrate. The bite and margins are then checked carefully.

- A diagnostic wax-up or mockup may be recommended when previewing shape and proportion would help with planning. Any additional laboratory fees are discussed before treatment.
AFTERCARE AND MAINTENANCE
- We review brushing, interdental cleaning and any bite-protection recommendations based on your individual case.
- Temporary sensitivity or awareness of the new restorations can occur. Follow the postoperative instructions provided for your specific treatment.
- Follow-up is individualized so we can evaluate comfort, bite, gum response and any adjustments that may be needed.

- When useful, a diagnostic wax-up or mockup can help communicate the proposed changes before final treatment.

- Early follow-up: We may reassess fit, comfort, bite and gum response after placement when clinically appropriate.
- Longer-term review: Veneers are monitored as part of your regular dental care. Follow-up timing depends on the individual case.
Bite protection such as a nightguard may be recommended if you grind or clench. Maintenance recommendations are based on your bite, restorations and individual risk factors.
