Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants? Palo Alto, CA
Implants in Palo Alto provided by Dr. Sharma and Dr. Cheong at Palo Alto Oral Health
Dental implants are an artificial tooth root that is attached to your jaw in order to keep a replacement tooth or bridge in place. These may be an option for someone who has lost a tooth or multiple teeth due to gum disease, injury, or other reasons. There are two types of dental implants that we use here at Palo Alto Oral Health typically prefer to use on our valued patients to help restore their smiles.
Types of Dental Implants
The most used type of implant is called an endosteal (in the bone) implant. These can be screws, blades, or cylinders that are placed into the jawbone. Each individual implant can hold one or more of the replacement teeth. This implant can be used as an alternative for patients who currently have bridges or removable dentures.
Another type of implant is called subperiosteal (on the bone). This type is placed on top of the jaw with the metal posts coming out of the gum in order to hold the new teeth or overdenture. Subperiosteal implants are mainly used for people who are not able to wear traditional dentures and who have little to no bone in their jaw.
Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
The best candidate for this treatment is someone who has generally good oral and overall health. Furthermore, the disease is known to deteriorate bone tissue as well, and thus, enough bone density is most definitely needed for the implant. The ideal candidates are the patients who have healthy and disease-free gum tissue. This is because implants are put into the mouth using the gum tissue and the bone that is already in your mouth. Our dentists can do this treatment because we have special knowledge about the subject as well as facilities and specialized training. We will work to bring your mouth back to its healthy state.
Furthermore, a good candidate for dental implants is one who has good bone support. A strong jaw construction supports the implant once installed. This is because if the implant is not reinforced by a strong bone then it can easily be loosened solely from chewing.
Another good candidate is someone who is great at maintaining their oral hygiene. Flossing and brushing twice a day as well as using a quality mouthwash after you brush and floss is crucial. This is because it will assist in taking away the plaque which is then protecting the person from infection around the implant. Visits to our dentist twice per year for that routine checkup also makes for a good candidate.
Also, people who do not smoke are also good candidates for this implant. This is due to the fact that smoking can greatly slow the healing process and elongate the time it takes for the treatment to heal. Someone who is trying to quit smoking can also be a good candidate. Additionally, they will need to be dedicated to stopping smoking or will need to discuss how many cigarettes they are smoking per day.
