Palo Alto, CA

Crown lengthening is a common surgical procedure that involves the removal of gum tissue, alveolar bone, or both. At Palo Alto Oral Health, we perform a crown lengthening procedure for teeth in need of repair. Sometimes, more of the tooth needs to be exposed to support a filling or crown.

Crown lengthening is a common option for patients who have broken a tooth off at the gum line. Patients who experience decay underneath an existing crown or filling also benefit from the procedure. Crown lengthening can also have cosmetic benefits. If you have a lot of gum tissue surrounding your upper teeth, crown lengthening can increase the size of your visible teeth, and give you a more beautiful smile.

Preparation For Crown Lengthening Procedure

The first step is a consultation visit. our doctors will review your medical history, perform an oral exam, and review or take X-rays. Once we have determined that crown lengthening is right for you, we can schedule the surgery.

Before the surgery, you may need to have your teeth professionally cleaned. If you need a crown, our doctors will fabricate a temporary one. This will help protect the tooth and make surgery easier. Using the temporary as an indicator, our doctors will be able to judge how much tissue or bone to remove.

Crown Lengthening Procedure

To eliminate pain and discomfort, we will administer a local anesthetic. The duration of surgery depends on the number of teeth that need to be lengthened. Single tooth lengthening usually involves the neighboring teeth as well. This helps the tissue reshape gradually. If bone and tissue are involved, the procedure will take longer.

our doctors will make small incisions in the gums to expose the roots of your teeth. The amount of tissue we remove varies from patient to patient. In some cases, we only remove a small portion of tissue. Most cases require us to remove some of the bone as well. Once we have exposed enough of the tooth, the area will be sterilized with a salt water solution and your gums will be stitched together.

The temporary crown will be removed before the procedure begins. After the procedure, our doctors will put the crown back.

Crown lengthening is a fairly minor procedure. It typically takes about three months for the gums to heal. Gum tissue tends to shrink while it heals. We want to make sure the healing process is complete. Otherwise, the edges of your final crown could show. Once you have fully healed, we can prepare for the permanent crown. At your final appointment, our doctors will place the crown, and make any necessary adjustments. Once we achieve the proper fit, the crown will be permanently cemented to the tooth.

After Crown Lengthening

Be sure to monitor your healing process carefully. If you experience excessive bleeding, pain, or swelling, contact us as soon as possible. our doctors will give you pain relievers and a special mouth rinse. You can brush near the surgical site, but be sure to avoid the gums.
