What Besides Food Really Gets Stuck Between Your Teeth?

Posted on 5/10/2021 by Shiv Sharma, DDS
What Besides Food Really Gets Stuck Between Your Teeth? You know the feeling, when you're eating corn on the cobb and it seems like more corn is stuck in between your teeth than is being digested in your stomach. Ironically, these also seem to be the moments when you are far away from the floss in your bathroom. Perhaps your nemesis is seeds. Raspberries, blackberries, and chia seeds are particularly antagonistic to the gaps between your teeth. Tiny seeds from these foods wedge between your teeth easily, and don't come out without a fight. It would be wise to choose other options if you are at an important dinner gala and planning on smiling into the night.

What Else Gets Stuck Between my Teeth?

To help you understand what else gets stuck in between your teeth, imagine eating your favorite potato chips at a summer picnic. After you and a few friends consume the bag, it is not uncommon for potato chips to settle between your teeth. Potato chips are full of starch. If the starches are not rinsed or brushed off your teeth, bacteria will feed on the starch and form dental plaque. If the plaque stays on your teeth it can harden into tartar, or calculus. Plaque and tartar can get stuck between your teeth. As they take over the tooth and weaken the enamel, cavities form.

Make an Appointment for a Routine Cleaning and Checkup

It is important to have a healthy dental hygiene routine. It is also important to make good dietary choices and avoid sugars and starches as plaque quickly forms after eating these foods. As you cannot avoid these foods completely, make sure to visit our office regularly for a professional cleaning and exam. We clean in between your teeth and assess if any cavities are forming.
