It is not a well-known fact that women need to take care of their oral health during pregnancy. That's because women are vulnerable to decay and infection during this crucial time. Here are a few things that expecting women need to keep in mind when they are eating.
Tooth Decay
You may have an urge to snack between meal times when you are pregnant; however, this can result in an increased risk of tooth decay, particularly if the snacks are full of sugar. Instead, you should try these foods:
•
Yogurt is an excellent snack as it is chock full of calcium, proteins, and prebiotics, all of which are very important for pregnant women.
•
Apple with Cheese: This will not just satisfy your sweet tooth but will also provide your body with much-needed fibers, protein, and calcium.
•
Almonds: You can take almonds everywhere with you. Plus, they are full of vitamin E, magnesium, and other beneficial stuff that your body needs.
Gum Disease
Changes in hormones during pregnancy can make women susceptible to gum diseases like gingivitis. Here are some types of food that can provide the required nutrition for your body and reduce inflammation:
•
Strawberries, Oranges, and Kiwis: These fruits are rich in vitamin C that can improve your immunity, support the production of collagen for gum development and strengthen blood vessels.
•
Sweet Potato, Broccoli, and Kale: These veggies contain beta carotene, which the body can turn into vitamin A.
•
Brussels Sprout, Tofu, Nuts, and Seeds: All of these foods are high in Omega-3, which fight inflammation.
Enamel Erosion
Eat food that can help remineralize your enamel and fight erosion. These include:
•
Banana: These are low in acidity and high in energy. They can help replenish the lost potassium due to morning sickness. In addition, they are also easy on the stomach.
•
Milk: Dairy products like milk are high in calcium and can neutralize the acids in your mouth that cause erosion of enamel.
•
Sugarless Gum: These can help increase the flow of saliva and neutralize acids that can cause erode enamel.
