How Teeth Suffer When You Have a Sugar Addiction

Posted on 3/15/2020 by Shiv Sharma, DDS
How Teeth Suffer When You Have a Sugar AddictionSome researchers are calling sugar the deadliest drug of the 21st century. Sugar contributes to many of the health-related problems we see in people all over the world. From diabetes to cardiovascular disease, excess sugar consumption can be blamed.

Unfortunately, research has also found that when we eat sugar, it's almost like taking a drug. Because sugar can be found in many processed foods, and many of us have more than just a sweet tooth. We may actually be addicted to sugar.

Sugar addiction can lead to all sorts of health problems. While you may associate sugar addiction to increased weight, it also contributes to many oral health issues. Your body suffers and your teeth suffer when you have a sugar addiction.

Why Sugar is Bad for Oral Health

Sugar is bad for your oral health for two main reasons. First, sugar gives bacteria in your mouth more food to eat. Bacteria in our mouth love sugar almost as much as we do. When you eat a lot of sugary foods, you allow the bacteria in your mouth to reproduce and grow more quickly. This results in higher cavity rates and gum disease.

Second, sugary food messes with your blood sugar levels. When people's blood sugar is out of whack, their bodies have a difficult time healing. Our gums are under the constant assault of bacteria. When they don't have a proper way to heal, they can develop gum disease. Gum tissue, unlike other tissue in our bodies can't regenerate on its own. This makes it important to take care of them whenever possible.

While kicking a sugar habit may be hard, it's much harder to deal with the dental trauma caused by it. If you'd like to talk about ways you can keep your mouth healthy, please contact our office. We can give you tips for a healthier mouth.
