What to Expect from A Root Canal Procedure

Posted on 9/25/2023 by Shiv Sharma, DDS
What to Expect from A Root Canal ProcedureThis is an orthodontic procedure that involves reducing the pain caused by the absence of a tooth. The bacteria might at times enter the pulp of the tooth causing an infection. If you are scheduled for a root canal procedure, it is important to understand what it involves before the operation.

When it is needed

A root canal is not performed on anyone, it is needed when the soft tissue within the tooth is infected. This can be due to tooth decay or trauma. It often occurs when a cavity is left untreated for a long period. This process is painless and has a 93% success rate.

What to expect during the procedure

Now, during the actual procedure, the dentist will have x-rays of the affected area. This will help in seeing the extent of damage caused by the infection hence ensuring an appropriate treatment option. After that is done, you will be administered some local anesthesia to numb the tooth and the surrounding gums. A small rubber dam is then placed on the infected area, then a small hole is made on the crown of the tooth to access the pulp, the pulp is then extracted and cleaning of the tooth chamber takes place. The disinfected canals are then filled with rubber material known as gutta-percha. Afterward, dental filing is done to seal the tooth and restrict the bacteria from accessing the tooth and lastly, a dental crown is installed. This crown is however placed after two to three weeks or in other cases, you can get the crown on the same appointment.
