What Is Oral Cancer?

Posted on 2/6/2023 by Shiv Sharma, DDS
What Is Oral Cancer? This is a condition that occurs as either a soft or hard sore in the mouth area, including the lips. It may also affect the throat, cheeks, and tongue. When first observed, one should take precautions before it reaches an advanced stage. It can be easily dealt with if discovered at an early stage.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Oral cancer may manifest in different ways. Mouth bleeding may be one of the signs. Softness and tenderness are experienced around the face area. Patches that are either red or white are seen inside the mouth. In addition, sores that bleed easily are also seen on the face or mouth. At an advanced stage, there is difficulty in speaking, chewing, and even tongue movements.

The voice may also change at a later stage. A person's dental arrangement changes with time such that the teeth no longer fit well together. The condition may lead to excessive weight loss. If any of the above signs are observed, it is advised that you visit the dentist.

Oral Cancer Risk Factors

Some factors expose people to the risk of contracting this disease. Smokers who use cigarettes are likely to develop oral cancer. Excessive use of tobacco in any way leads to the development of this cancer in the gums. The use of alcohol also increases the risk. Exposure of young children to ultraviolet rays from the sun may lead to the development of sores on their lips. Oral sex greatly exposes people to this condition.

Treatment of oral cancer

Just like other types of cancer, oral cancer is treated by conducting surgery to get rid of the cancerous wound or growth. Chemotherapy may also be done to finish off any cancerous cells that may remain after surgery.
